My Little Scientists

As we began our exploration into solids and liquids, the students have become so interested in working with them.

One of our classroom centers has become a mystery solid and liquid.  Many of the students have made observations about this experiment.

Another observation is of the liquids in the bottles.  Here is what some of the students have had to say.

In small groups, we have conducted three separate experiments. 

Experiment #1: Gummy Bears
Two gummy bears will be saturated overnight; one in water, one in salt water.

Sopa de Piedras

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, this week we read "Sopa de Piedras." 





Monday, we discussed and read the story. 





In the story three soldiers come to a village looking for food.  None of the villagers want to share their food for whatever reason. 

So the soldiers go to the plaza, put a Stone in a pot, and begin to cook "soup."  Little by Little, the villagers come, and to make the soup better, they each bring an ingredient. 

It results in a delicious pot luck soup for the entire village to enjoy. 







After, the students illustrated the ingredients that the villagers had brought, and added to the pot. (CCLS Literature 1) 


Tuesday, we created a graph of the ingredients students brought in.  For first-time graphs, I thought the students did an excellent job.  (CCLS Math 1.MD.4)

All morning long students prepared for our Thanksgiving lunch; cutting and peeling vegetables, mixing and stirring ingredients.











After lunch students enjoyed their feast.

El Descubrimiento de Puerto Rico

Cada año que tenemos un día para celebrar y educar en Puerto Rico y su cultura. 


Este año nuestra primera celebración de grado fue un poco diferente. 

Comenzamos el día con los estudiantes más jóvenes llevando un desfile a lo largo de los pasillos de la escuela. 

La Facultad y los estudiantes mayores alineados los pasillos en la participación.



Después del desfile, las aulas tenían diferentes actividades donde los padres y la familia podían participar en. 

Empezamos con un clásico personaje del folklore de Puerto Rico-Juan Bobo. 
Presenté brevemente Juan Bobo a los estudiantes que pueden estar familiarizados con esta figura literaria.


Leí "Juan Bobo y La Caldera." Dejé de leer justo antes del final y pidió a los estudiantes y sus familias a usar los diferentes centros para demostrar cómo pensaban que la historia terminaría.

Algunos estudiantes eligieron plasticina como su medio de elección; otros eligieron el área de bloques, pintura, mesa de luz o ilustración.


Después de un tiempo reunidos otra vez y había compartido nuestras predicciones diferentes. 


Finalmente, los estudiantes y la familia miraba un video corto de la historia para ver el verdadero final del cuento popular.

Nacionalidad

Nuestra investigacion de la nacionalidad empieza con los simbolos.  Los estudiantes ya saben muchos simbolos; por ejemplo, el signo de McDonalds, corazones para amor, y una cara feliz para algo bueno.  Pero en este unidad, los estudiantes pensaran sobre los simbolos de nuestro pais, y tambien de Puerto Rico.
